Your Brain – A Terrible Master or Fantastic Servant?

1

When worries are left unchecked they creep into the mind and give voice to the inner heckler. Instead of whispering into your ear, “it’s going to be alright,” the voices in your head clutter your thoughts and weaken your confidence, shredding your self-esteem away.

Whether it’s an exam you have been studying for, a job interview, or you have been asked to speak on the stage in front of a huge crowd, an inner voice which should be your ‘best friend’ becomes your biggest ‘disbeliever’. It will keep coming up with excuses, sneer at you or provoke you to ‘give up’. Huh? The one who should have been your strongest pillar when the world turns a back on you, is asking you to give up?

Call it cruelty at its best!

Your guide to celebrate an eco-friendly Eid-ul-Adha this year .

The Day of Arafah has passed and Haj has been performed. Muslims across the world are getting ready to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha -the festival celebrated to remember Prophet Ibraheem’s willingness to sacrifice his son Isma’il as an act of obedience towards Allah.

Similar to all our important festivals, preparations are in full swing.  Moms are busy planning Eid lunches and dinners, going over the grocery and to-do lists over and over again to ensure everything has been brought in advance and properly stocked. Some of us are ‘still’ running to the tailor for our Eid dresses or are yet to head to the shopping mall to buy one. Do not forget the mehndi appointment in the evening where sometimes one has to sit for countless hours waiting for their turn. Due to the immense rush some salons treat their customers More >

You the People have the Power

Today more than ever this message goes out to the hearts of every one in Pakistan and citizens of the world over. In light of the escalating violence, the great unraveling of civil liberties and suffocating inequalities, let us take pause for a moment. This speech will stir something within you.

This epic speech was filmed in 1940 by Charlie Chapin as a satire against Nazi Germany. The film caused a huge stir, and some say that the public outcry from this video helped push the US to join the war against Nazi Germany.

I’m sorry but I don’t want to be an Emperor – that’s not my business – I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that. We all want to live

Meditation: Heal the soul

1

Find beauty in life, appreciate things around you, be ready and prepared for sudden changes in life, be kind and gentle, and you will see surprising results.

The art of meditation has been practiced since times immemorial. Be it Sufis or Buddhists, all have employed meditative techniques like yoga with different postures, breathing exercises and different goals. The common thread, however, is that meditation is a pathway to peace, a way of connecting with the divine or finding the ultimate truth. It is a practice that not only soothes the body but heals the soul, the inner being, bringing one peace and contentment. Meditation is the skill of focusing on an object or a thought. It enables one to understand everything in life. It lets one observe and indulge with the inner self, allowing people to get acquainted with their whole entity. In a nutshell, meditation is a corridor More >

7 Reasons why I went Vegan this Ramadan

0

This year, the month of August corresponds to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a time for fasting, a gathering for family and community, and deep inner contemplation. Similar to it’s catholic counterpart Lent, one must give up food, drink and other urges from dawn till dusk. Many also mark the occasion by sacrificing a worldly pleasure as a way to gain greater insight into ourselves and our concept of need.

This year my sacrifice was all animal products altogether. Being a vegetarian, one would think the transition would be easy. But finding replacements for nutritious eggs, delicious cheese and ever dependable butters was a task I wasn’t as well prepared for as I would have liked.

So why did I decide to give up even more food at a time when one is already eating less due to fasting?
