0

“Energy is central to the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of human existence. Energy is a principal source of environmental stress, it is a principal motor of macroeconomic growth, and it is a prerequisite for meeting basic human needs.”

The above mentioned quote very aptly states the importance of energy in the human affairs & lays the foundation for the struggle between different nations that we witness today. If we re-visit the history of the human race we will see that the control over the energy resources has always been a major concern for humans. One of the reasons is that this control is strongly related with the survival of the humans as well.

The hunter societies were the only ones that were not harming the nature in their struggle of survival, but instead giving the nature time to regenerate itself. However, no other form of human community More >

Oan Village is one of the most inspirational stories where PSN also had a part to play. We partnered with Uth-Oye, a cause based clothing company from Karachi and Clinton Global Initiative to deliver lost-cost energy solutions to a village in Tharparkar, Sindh. Located 19km northwest of Nagar Parkar, Oan village is a model village which unlike other villages in the area has access to water and improved agriculture practices. The only thing missing the lives of the villagers was electricity.

Together Uth Oye, CGI and PSN conducted a small pilot programme to introduce small-scale solar lights in Oan. Being the first programme of its nature, there were a few hurdles that the team faced. One such challenge was to determine the affordability or price More >

By Ambreen Rahman

How do villagers to adapt and purchase small-scale solar technologies? What vital components should a development program address to make rural electrification successful? How can modern technology – TV, lights, fans – be coupled with the Millennium Development Goals (MDG)?

LOCATION

The location: village of Oan, 19km northwest of Nagarparkar in District Tharparkar Sindh. Unlike most villages in Thar villages where 80% is under the national poverty line, Oan is a ‘model village’ for the past decade due to access to water and improved agriculture practices. However, as in the rest of Thar, electricity, water supply and gas services are unavailable. School and healthcare clinics are also far-spread, without any reliable public transport system.

PILOT PROGRAM DETAILS

Teri Gram Ecological Retreat

Irony of the times: a world class ecological model of excellence emerged in one of the top polluting cities in Asia.

Found in the outskirts of New Delhi, in an upscale development town named Gurgaon, is the Teri Gram campus. The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI) was founded by the Tata family in the 1970s as a way to model India towards a more energy efficient future. Today it is known as a centre of excellence, in India and around the world, with offices in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Dr. R.K. Pauchauri leads the institute. He won a Nobel Prize for environmental protection in 2004 – the same year as Al Gore was awarded for his work with an ‘Inconvenient Truth, which made waves throughout out the world raising awareness towards the urgency of climate change.
