Pictorial view of the Canal Road

As you all must be aware that the trees on the canal road are being cut, even though the local government is in breach of the Supreme Court’s orders as explained in the post here.

Here is a pictorial view of what is going on. Anyone who has passed through that area must have felt that you no more feel that coolness, which was a trademark of the canal even in the most excruciating heat of Lahore. Not to mention that the entire area is not yet cleared out, so we can imagine what will happen then.

For those who think that it is going to help the traffic, well what improvement have we seen in the traffic due to the Kalima chowk flyover? As far as my observation goes, it was just wastage of our already scarce resources which could have More >

Government of Punjab in Breach of supreme court orders

Dr. Parvez Hassan, Chairman of the Mediation Committee, wrote the following letter to the Editor of Dawn. The letter hasn’t been published yet, but is a strong statement from the Supreme Court appointee on the behavior of the Government of Punjab in implementing the recommendations of the Mediation Committee. This is being ostensibly done under the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court announced last week. The Supreme Court has, in this judgment, graciously accepted all the recommendations of the Mediation Committee that I had constituted on my appointment as Mediator by the Chief Justice of Pakistan. West posits that cities and in some circumstances companies avoid collapse through innovation, something that Malthus didn’t fully account for. However, the catch is that collapse comes sooner after every innovation, so more innovations are required to avoid collapse. The point that he neglects to discuss is if there is a metaphorical heart attack for cities, just as there are for humans.

PSN got together with Zimmedar Shehri for a clean up of Liberty area (all the waste collected was taken by the Waste Busters truck to the recycling facility), followed by a walk and coinciding with a cycle ride with Critical Mass Lahore from Punjab Institute of Mental Health to Liberty Chowk (its Mental Health Week!)

More pictures to come!

For us in Lahore, 350 was all about collaborative, meaningful action. We’d like to thank you all for helping us highlight the amazing work and meaningful action these local groups take. A very special thanks to Waste Busters, Critical Mass and Zimmedar Shehri for making our 10/10/10 Work Party amazing.
